Augustus Meredith Nanton

Sir Augustus Meredith Nanton (7 May 1860 – 24 April 1925) was one of the principal investors and developers of Western Canada, particularly Winnipeg and Vancouver. He later served as President of The Dominion Bank in Toronto.

Early Life

He was the son of (Daniel) Augustus Nanton (1831-1873) and his wife Louisa (b.1831), daughter of William Botsford Jarvis of Rosedale. His father, a barrister and partner of Sir Alexander Tilloch Galt, had been educated at Eton and Oxford, but was an alcoholic and died at a young age leaving five children and heavy debts.

He was made a Knight Bachelor in 1917.
